CRUDE GLYCEROL

Glycerol is an unrefined raw material that is a colorless, odorless, viscous liquid byproduct of the biodiesel production process. It is sweet-tasting and non-toxic. It has many commercial uses: production of chemical products, fuel additives, production of hydrogen, development of fuel cells, ethanol or methanol production, animal feed, co-digestion and co-gasification, and waste treatment, food sweetener and humectant, solvent, pharmaceutical formulations, personal care products, botanical extracts, and ultrasonic couplant, a material (usually liquid) that facilitates the transmission of ultrasonic energy from the transducer into the test specimen..

A press cake or oil cake is the solid remaining after pressing plants or fruits to extract oil from seeds or plant materials. It includes dried grain, glycerol and protein-rich feed cake and meal.

Some plant solids may be toxic, thus inedible. In such cases, the press cake is made into fertilizer. It can also be burned in a boiler to create steam for heating and cooking.

MEDICAL PRODUCTS

Nitroglycerin is an organic nitrate compound that dialates blood vessels to improve blood flow. It is produced by nitrating glycerol with nitric acid to produce nitric acid ester. It is used to treat heart conditions, such as angina pectoris and chronic heart failure.

CO2 from ethanol plants are regarded as high grade and after some minor processing to remove the small amounts of impurities, the pure CO2 stream is sold to the merchant markets for use in beverage production and certain medical uses as well as dry ice. CO2 is also used in heavy industrial processes such as enhanced oil recovery and fracturing.

FORMATE

Formate is produced from glycerin and E. coli strains. It is a common preservative in animal feed, and is also used as an antibacterial agent.

Propylene glycol is a synthetic liquid substance that absorbs water. Produced from further processing of crude glycerol, it is a commonly used drug solubilizer in topical, oral, and injectable medications.  It is a direct food additive in frozen foods such as ice cream and frozen desserts. Propylene glycol is also used to make polyester compounds, and as a base for de-icing solutions such as anti-freeze. It’s special properties maintain moisture in certain medicines, cosmetics, or food products.

New strains of E. coli have been developed to ferment glycerol chemical feedstock to make everything from food and drink flavorings, perfumes and dyes, non-toxic plastic solvents, noncorrosive airport deicers, plastics, medications and food additives.
